Submitted by: MBWA Mistress Posted on: 1/7/05 The American Dream, DENIED. You ever think about the real-life consequences of continuing education? Depending on your newly chosen field, you are either very valuable upon graduation, or not valuable at all – it all depends on that little portion of the equation called ‘experience'. Ok, I've had millions of experiences in my life time, and AT LEAST one hundred thousand of them were directly related to what it was I did for a living at the time of the experience, AND I can confidently say that I've never fallen flat on my face in ANY business situation, anytime, ever. NOW, IF I've had that many years of various experiences, good or bad - and I HAVE thrived in those various environments, then what's to say that I would not be able to accomplish any NEW goal (after all, let's keep life exciting), even having never attempted it before – BUT having the tenacity, work ethic, dedication and skills from all life's previous experiences, IN ADDITION to having received the education to do so. Hey, we all know that when you start a new job, you have to ‘warm up', ‘get in the groove' of whatever it is you are doing for a living, so that you can do your very best. (Yes, weather it be misguided or not, I like to think I'm not the only person out there on this big blue marble who actually still takes pride in what I do for a living, ESPECIALLY once someone has taken a chance on me, and given me that oh-so-precious opportunity to prove myself). What's to say that this warm up time, or 90-day probationary period is not enough to PROVE that you can do an OUTSTANDING job at whatever it is you've been newly trained to do.It all depends upon the person, not necessarily the experience. Hmmm, why do I feel like I'm running in circles here?! Hell, I'm just asking for minimal ‘direction' from a new employer on how they need things done in order for them to be comfortable with our pairing, after all, that's what it's all about. I'm not asking for full-on training, that's what I paid the school for! Unfortunately, you find your self in a classic Catch-22 situation...You can't - because you haven't. These days not many employers are willing to take you on with less than 2 years of experience within the field you are applying. IF you happen to be in a situation where you've chosen, I'm talking consciously CHOSEN to CHANGE your field for one reason or another then HOW in the world are you supposed to meet the criteria that states that you must have 2 years experience in your newly chosen field before you become employable and although internships may jump to mind first...think about this for a minute...you'll get paid $?.00 and hour on an internship (and, oh yea, you're not thirty anymore) WHO in the US these days can afford to support their family on $?.00 and hour...after years of building your household on five times that much? Keeping in mind that even though you are attempting to participate in your given right to pursue happiness, all the while, you still have your family and financial responsibilities to take into consideration. In this day and age, who out there can actually take the time to NOT get paid, while obtaining the required years of experience it takes TO BE paid? HUH? Where does the logic lie in that? Where are the employers who are willing to take on someone with 20+ years experience battling the daily grind just to make ends meet, then decides that they'd like to finally do something they may actually LOVE for a living. Ponder this - If you knew then, what you know now, WOULD you have taken more time to choose what you'd like to do for the rest of your life, rather than just surviving the roller coaster that IS life? And when you are young, dumb and under 21 you may choose a job or career as I did, that everyone else thought suited you, and you were quite good at, but after 20+ years, there is no longer any joy in it, if there really ever was any... I owe, I owe, it's off to work I go. I feel like time has passed so quickly, and I've experienced so much - BUT how much did I CHOOSE, versus having NO choice due to necessity. Can you imagine? How would if feel to wake up each day absolutely GLOWING at the prospect of being able to spend eight to ten hours doing something you love, AND getting paid for it! Being the absolute best you can be at something you love to do. Ahh, the American Dream, DENIED.
